dc.description.abstractA low-power microwave ion source for the production of protons in the iThemba LABS Van de Graaff accelerator at Faure has been developed. The main advantages of the source are its simple construction, its low power consumption, the small number of parameters that have to be adjusted and the fact that the discharge starts easily. The construction and the operational conditions of the source are discussed. The beam intensities are compared with those of a duoplasmatron ion source in use at iThemba LABS.en_US
