dc.description.abstract | The main aim of this study was to ascertain the attitudes of professional nurses towards strike action and its implication on nursing education. The study was done in two hospitals in the KwaZulu-Natal province. A descriptive survey was undertaken. The total sample consisted of two hundred professional nurses. The study revealed that the majority of professional nurses were against strikes, but the feeling that they are exploited by the employing body and management policies appears to make nurses to strike. The strong influence of Trade Unions in nurses strikes was also confirmed. Many factors were identified as causing strikes, but poor salaries and working conditions were the main causes of these strikes. The study also revealed that patients suffer a lot during strikes and student nurses also suffer because there was no clinical teaching and learning. Recommendations made highlighted the urgent need for active participation of the employing body, management, professional nurses, and the public in preventing nurses strike. | en_US |
