A descriptive survey was conducted in the hospitals and clinics of District 29 KwaZulu Natal where the pregnant mothers received their health services. One set of interview schedule was designed for pregnant mothers with sexually transmitted infections. The interview schedule consisted of open and closed ended questions. The total number of pregnant mothers was thirty. The respondents were systematically selected every third pregnant mother was chosen until a required number was reached. The study revealed that health education given to pregnant women with sexually transmitted infections was not effective. There was an increase in the infection rate among those who were previously exposed to health education. Based on the findings of the research it was recommended that new objectives, content, teaching strategies and evaluation strategies should be introduced in the present programmes used in order" to reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted infections in pregnant women. It is also advisable that all health professionals should be involved in giving health education, and not only to professional nurses. | en_US |
