Abstract
Description
Information security is a vital component of records management in any organization or body that handles documents of importance such as a hospital handling medical records. Public health care is free in South Africa, meaning that public hospitals generally have a larger clientele to serve as opposed to private. Information security management is essential for every organization to practice efficiently to secure the data it keeps. The current study seeks to further assess the management of medical records in respect to information security management particularly in South Africa healthcare. To attend this gap, this study has expanded research on the information security of medical records in public hospitals. Moving to an electronic records management system has ensured that Retrieval of records is done at ease to ensure that information will be stored longer and in larger amounts. This study was aimed at investigating information security management of medical records at R.K Khan Hospital in Kwazulu-Natal (KZN). The set objectives were attended to via reviewing literature and collecting data from the hospital at hand. This study used the quantitative research methodology; therefore, the paradigm of the study was a positivist one. This study used quantitative research methods for data collection. This study made use of questionnaires as a method of data collection; it is thus equally important for the study to highlight other possible data collection methods that one may use in conducting other research studies. The study randomly selected 19 departments that deal directly with patients and their medical records, (4 records handlers per department) were involved in the survey. This has given the study a total number of 50 randomly selected participants. The study established that the hospital has a moderate information security system in place that only deals with paper medical records. Several risks in the hospital happen a s a result of medical records not being computerised. The information security management system users showed little understanding of the concept and had limited training on information security and management of medical records.
